Agenda

9:00am ET - President's Welcome, Andrew P. Chastain, MSPAS, PA-C.

9:10am ET - High Risk and Benign Breast Disease, Michelle Khan, PA-C (1 credit)

10:15am ET - Managing Clinical Risks - Who are we sending home?, Kayur V. Patel, MD (1 credit)

The threat of litigation following a misdiagnosis or improper treatment presents a challenge to healthcare clinicians. Subtle mistakes can lead to poor patient outcomes. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association; Diagnostic errors were the number one reason for adverse events that resulted in malpractice payouts in outpatient settings.

Avoid costly and time-consuming litigation by anticipating such situations and appropriately managing the medical needs of the patient.

Topics Include:

1. Patient presenting with a headache – misdiagnosis of an acute bleed.

2. Abdominal pain in an office setting – missed appendicitis.

3. Patient comes with back pain – missed abscess.

11:30am ET - Zypitamag (pitavastatin): Statin Intolerance and Lipid Management, Janice Kim, Medical Science Liaison

Making a decision on statin therapy can be challenging. It has been reported that approximately 40-75% of patients discontinue their statin therapy within 1 year of starting it. Pitavastatin is a moderate intensity statin that is metabolized differently than most statins and has a reduced potential for certain drug-drug interactions.

During the webinar, we will:

  • Review current lipid guidelines and management options
  • Provide an overview of comparative statin clinical studies
  • Discuss statin-associated side effects, providing alternate management strategies

12:20pm ET - Combatting the Opioid Crisis: An Update in Best Practices, Katie Beaudoin, MPAS, PA-C (2 credits)

Indiana law mandates that all practitioners registered to dispense controlled substances must have completed 2 hours of continuing education during the previous two years addressing the topics of opioid prescribing and opioid abuse. This two-part series will fulfill the 2h CME requirement . There will be pre and post-test questions and a survey for peer review.

Part I will discuss issues with opioid abuse and update providers with a review on the pathophysiology of pain, the MOA of pain medications and an introduction to the utilization of multimodal medication techniques. There will be examples of working protocols and resources for prescribing.

Part II will summarize the Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force Report. This will focus on the multidisciplinary treatment categories and steps required for a successful pain management treatment plan

2:20pm ET - Closing Remarks

This activity has been reviewed by the AAPA Review Panel and is compliant with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 4 AAPA Category 1 CME credits.
